IN PRAISE OF
"Jack Morgan and his colleagues focus with laser accuracy on our cultures'
need to embrace and support all persons when finally, in their life's journeys,
they are called upon to become vulnerable. It is in our care that we in
turn are then cared for, together patient and care giver then discover
the intent of creation. This is a very important book for all persons who seek to be there one for another."
—Robert J. Campbell, D.Min., DD
"This book is about providing clarity on issues and needs, positive
reinforcement for what is already working and also dares to demand of us that we
do more and do it better. Anthologies can be problematic because they facilitate
many thoughts and many contributors. This is one anthology that offers you
something in every chapter."
—Rev. Dr. Richard B. Gilbert , BCC, Executive Director, Resources
Hotline, Volume 4, Number 28, December 2001
ABOUT THE BOOK
None of us could survive in the workplace, community,
or even in our homes, if we allowed everyone to see how truly vulnerable
we are. Yet, social support is a necessity if we are to achieve whatever
it is we set out to achieve in this life. "No human being is an island
unto himself." Social Support: A Reflection of Humanity is a "how
to" book. In this work, the authors examine the nature of social support,
how it can be offered, and how social support differs from other forms
of therapy.
Primarily practical, this work is founded on important
theoretical considerations. Each author offers a well-balanced overview
of the significant theories and skills, written from the vantage point
of their vast expertise. Chapters authored by John Morgan on the nature
of human support and Rose Marie Jaco who helps to distinguish the difference
between support and counseling lay down the book’s groundwork. Contributing
chapters by Carolyn Jaffe and Carol Ehrlich indicate the best way to support
dying persons; Darcy Nichols focuses on helping the bereaved in general,
while Mindy Gough discusses the particular needs of bereaved children;
Robert Stevenson suggests methods in which bereaved young persons can be
helped within the school and how other young persons can act as peer support;
Tom Golden offers practical information on the difference between working
with the masculine and feminine in us all; Marie Antoinette Parisio notes
the needs of children and adults with mental limitations; Antoon Leenaars,
David Lester, and Susanne Wenckstern provide practical information about
suicide prevention and the support of friends and family in suicide postvention;
Elizabeth Slump reminds us about the necessity of working at the political
or structural level in suicide prevention; and Mary Vachon emphasizes how
important it is to support the supporter.
Those who work with the dying and bereaved are privileged
to be with other persons when they take the chance to remove their protecting
walls, when they dare to be themselves. It is the hope of the authors in
presenting this book to better serve them all.
Intended Audience: Grief counselors, hospice and bereavement
volunteers, and lay audience.
