ABOUT THE BOOK
Comparing the U.S. and Canadian health care systems has been a significant part of the search for a more efficient, efficacious, and equitable health institution. North America has witnessed a quasi-experiment over the past quarter of a century in its health care institutions. As late as the 1960s, the United States and Canadian health care systems were virtually identical in that both systems spent the same amount of money on health care as a percentage of GNP and delivered their services in a similar way. By 1971, the systems' financing and decision-making processes began to diverge in significant ways. The Canadian system continued to consolidate its single-payer system while the U.S. continued its market-oriented system.

Part I of this book explores the economists debate over the relative costs of the two health care systems. Part II explores the debate about access and quality of outcomes in the U.S. and Canadian systems. Part III of this book incorporates surveys and debate on the U.S. and Canadian health care systems in terms of satisfaction, interest, and willingness to accept either the U.S. market-driven system or the Canadian single-payer system.

The conclusion updates trends in the two countries and suggests directions for future research.
